Nokia Lumia 920 announced

Nokia has taken the wraps off its batch of Windows Phone 8 handsets, announcing the flagship Nokia Lumia 920.

Nokia is putting a lot of its efforts into Windows Phone 8 in the hope that the company can compete against the two OS giants in the smartphone market – Android and iOS.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is a handset packed with high-end features. Announced at Nokia World 2012, with TechRadar in attendance, it comes with a 4.5-inch WXGA resolution glove-friendly screen and some hefty imaging weight.

This is because Nokia has opted to add the company's Pureview picture-taking technology into the phone.

Unfortunately it is not as powerful as the tech that was found in the Nokia Pureview 808. Instead of 40MP, you get an 8MP sensor. There's also a Carl Zeiss lens on board.

It has also added wireless charging and announced a number of partnerships for this, including Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf shops have signed up to this. So expect wireless charging points from these places and fingers crossed it does better than the Palm Pre.

NFC is on board as well, so expect a load of compatible wireless headphones and speaker docks.

Nokia has also bolstered the battery on the 920, giving it a 2000 mAh battery which is '30 per cent' better than quad-core phones on the market.

The 920's screen is also better than ever. Nokia is using technology called Nokia PureMotion HD+ and this is supposedly better than HD. It is so good that you will be able to see your phone's screen even if you were faced with desert sun. I'm guessing you won't be doing this, but it's comforting to know that if you were ever stranded in the desert you will still be able to see your texts.

Nokia has also added an augmented reality spin to the Nokia Lumia 920. This is in the form of Nokia City lens. This allows you to see the names of restaurants, cafes, on your smartphone display, all you have to do is point your phone screen at the area.

Nokia is calling this a more human touch. Using your actual eyes is a more human touch, but the technology is pretty interesting.

Nokia Maps is also integral to the new Lumia 920. Not only do you get turn-by-turn navigation (Nokia Drive) on board but also offline maps.


Oh, and you can also take screenshots - and the first one ever taken has already been uploaded to SkyDrive (left).

Bucking the trend for black and white handsets, the Nokia Lumia 920 Pureview will be available in a number of colours, including grey, yellow and red.

In a showcase of next-gen tech, the Lumia 920 also includes wireless charging, 32GB of storage on board and have an S4 Snapdragon processor.


When it comes to looks, Nokia has decided not to mess too much with its formula – it's kept the unibody polycarbonate design similar, so it is still chunky in the hand but great to look at. Stay tuned for the TechRadar hands on Nokia Lumia 920 review, coming soon.
